Industrial Terminal PC, perfect for tough environments

Captec launches industrial terminal PC for MES applications.

Purpose designed to withstand the rigours of factory floor environments, the new Katana MES series of fully integrated, rugged PC terminals, from Captec, is ideal for shop floor MES/ERP/MRP client applications.

Captec, a leading specialist European Industrial PC manufacturer, has designed its Katana MES series to provide cost effective installation and control of IT and automation applications in places where conventional PCs are either unsuitable, unable to cope or have a limited lifespan. The new series incorporates all three functional parts of a PC – CPU, monitor and keyboard/mouse – in a compact, rugged and fully sealed, IP65-rated aluminium case.

Priced very competitively, it features a powerful 1GHz processor, capable of running all Windows and Linux operating systems, an integral high-brightness 15" LCD display, a stylish membrane keyboard and an integral mouse pad. The display, the Katana's most striking feature, incorporates the latest in smart LCD panel technology, with four backlight lamps and an optimised inverter delivering exceptionally high brightness, extremely wide viewing angle and a display resolution of 1024x768.

The display is protected from impact by a toughened clear Polycarbonate window and the anti-glare surface enhances visibility by reducing reflections from background lighting. An alternative touch-screen option provides keyboard-less user input for faster operation.

The fully sealed membrane QWERTY keyboard provides all the PC keyboard functions and switch technology, combined with pillow embossing, provides a positive tactile feel with long-term reliability of over 10million key presses. Integral with the keyboard is the latest Glidepoint mouse technology offering a sensitive and highly effective mouse pad for effortless navigation. Integral finger tap detection for mouse buttons, gives easy operation and speed of use.

To cater for the rigours of industrial applications, the hard disk drive is fitted in an anti-vibration cradle to provide protection from oscillating machinery and shock. Easy, tidy and unobtrusive cabling is provided via sealed glands in the base. Connectors are hidden behind a removable protective front cover plate, to ensure that cables cannot be disconnected accidentally. Its fan-less design increases reliability.

A multitude of connectivity ports are provided as standard, including Ethernet, USB, parallel and serial Ports and, should any additional functionality be required, one PCI Expansion slot is available for a plug-in expansion card. Integral RFID options are also available for increased tracking efficiency.

The Katana is manufactured in Captec's UK Manufacturing facility, which is managed under a strict ISO9001:2000 Quality System. Launched in late 2005 in Germany, it has received an unprecedented level of market uptake, having already been installed in over 40 factories in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The UK launch will be followed by North America at the Manufacturing Week exhibition in Chicago at the end of March.
